The scriptures are full of references to "stones", both literal and symbolic. One such stone is identified as the stone upon which the patriarch Jacob rested his head when he dreamed of the heavenly ladder. This stone has not received the attention it deserves from Bible scholars, because they generally assume it was left where Jacob found it.

However, this is not the case. The stone that Jacob later anointed with oil and declared to be "God's House" (Beht-El) did not remain lost in the wilderness of Luz; it continued to play an important part in the destiny of Jacob's descendants. In the past, such suggestions have been dismissed as fascinating legend and tradition, but there are pertinent historical writings and visible evidence worthy of consideration.

Mr. Capt's legendary book recording the Declaration of Arbroath, William Wallace, and Robert The Bruce, together with his knights, who upon signing the declaration claimed descent from the Israelites in Egypt. The validity of such a claim is supported by many historians who point to Israelite presence (particularly of Dan and Judah) in the British Isles at a very early date, even before the Exodus.

On the sixth of April, 1320 A. D., King Robert (the Bruce) of Scotland authorized the sending of a letter to Pope John XXII which has become what many call "Scotland's most precious possession." The document is known today as the "Declaration of Arbroath" or "The Scottish Declaration of Independence." It is kept in a shallow glass case in the Register House of Edinburgh.

At the time this famous document was drawn up, a two year peace was in effect between Scotland and England. The Pope had taken the side of the English because Robert Bruce had failed to show the 'proper' respect the Pope deemed was due him. Robert recognized that if peace was to be restored it would be necessary for the Pope to see the wisdom of a negotiated settlement and to use his influence upon King Edward II. The author gives the following account of this famous letter's arrival on the historical scene:

"In April of the year 1320 A.D., King Robert Bruce called the Scottish Parliament into session, at Arbroath Abbey, to hammer out a letter of protest to the Pope. The letter, composed in memorable Latin prose, recorded the great antiquity of the Scottish people and how they had always been ruled by their own kings. . . . they reminded the Pope of the shameful English contention that they had found it impossible to free the Holy Land from the heathen on account of the war they were having with their neighbors.

". . . The letter described Robert Bruce as a king, 'who, that he might free his people and heritage from the hands of the enemy, rose like another Joshua or Maccabeus, and cheerfully endured toil and weariness, hunger and peril.' . . .

" . . The Pope acknowledged receipt of the letter and was apparently somewhat mollified by the declaration, because he promptly suspended his proceedings against the Scots. . . . However, King Edward II refused to conclude a peace settlement with the Scots and in August 1322, when the two-year- old truce was over, again invaded Scotland."

Bruce's letter preserves an intriguing allusion to the origin of the Scots and throws light on one of history's most fascinating mysteries . . . what was the fate of the so-called "Ten Lost Tribes of Israel?"

". . . Robert Bruce and his Knights . . . date their beginnings as a nation one thousand two hundred years after the outgoing (Exodus - 1453 B.C.) of the 'people of Israel.' Thus, they claim descent from the Israelites in Egypt."

The author expands on this idea giving various accounts of the many significant signs from archaeological and historical discoveries that identify the ancient Israelites as the ancestors of the Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, Germanic and kindred peoples . . . to which the Scots are an important part.

Though it contains only sixty four pages this book is a remarkable reservoir of Scottish history and interests. It includes photographs, drawings and maps as well as famous poems and songs exalting Scotland, its culture and its people.

The silent years of Jesus between 12 and 30 and an examination of the historical records concerning Joseph of Arimathea the great uncle of Jesus as a provencial Roman Senator and metal merchant. It was rumored that he owned many of the merchant ships that came to England from Rome and Phoenicia to barter for metal and other goods. Did Jesus accompany his uncle to this isle of the west? Mr. Capt reveals that there is substantial evidence to support that he did.

EXCERPT: One day a small boat, from one of the large merchant ships anchored in the Bristol Channel, tied up at the causeway of the Lake Village. A bearded man and a slim young boy in his early teens stepped ashore. They were no strangers to the villagers who crowded around to welcome them. The merchant had been coming by their village for many years, on his way to the lead mines of the Mendip Hills. It was known that he held a very important position in the powerful Roman government and carried the title "Nobilus Decurio". It was rumored that he owned many of the merchant ships that came to these Isle of the West, from Rome and Phoenicia, to barter for metal and other goods

The auburn haired lad was also known. He had accompanied His uncle on a prior visit, staying at the village and exploring the surrounding territory, while His uncle conducted his business at the nearby Mendip lead mines. But this time a woman, perhaps in her early thirties was with them. As the boy helped the woman ashore, the crew proceeded to unload various sized chests and sacks, obviously belonging to them. Accommodations were soon found and the baggage was carried to one of the tiny huts facing the estaury.

In the weeks that followed, the merchant and the boy constructed a wattle hut, similar to those of the village, on a nearby island. The site they chose was at the base of a hill from which ran a spring of fresh water. Hawthorne and oak trees dotted the landscape. Small game and fish were in abundance and the marshy fertile shores promised bountiful crops. When the hut was finished, the woman and the boy moved from the village to their new home. The merchant and his men sailed away.

Jesus and His mother, Mary, were alone . . .

Very few people are familiar with the name Iona, but once it was one of the best loved names in Christendom. It is a little island in the midst of the Innera Hebrides or Western islands of Scotland. It is noteworthy that the Hebrew name for Dove is Iona, and in Latin, Columbia, for under the influence of a man by the name of St. Columbia, the glory and renown of Iona blossomed into full glory. It developed into the most famous center of Celtic Culdee Christianity, the mother community from whence missionaries were dispatched for the conversion of the pagan tribes in Scotland and Northern England.

Iona played an important part in the founding of the Scottish nation. It was on Iona that Columba crowned Aidan (son of Gabran the king of Dalriada) King of Scotland, upon the Stone Lia Fail, the Stone upon which rested his head the night he dreamed of a ladder stretching to heaven with God at the top. ...

A study of Druidism - their origin, teaching, and government and their religious beliefs that prepared Britain to receive apostolic Christianity that arrived in Britain shortly after the Ascension of Our Lord.

Just a few of the questions asked and answered by Mrs. Elder in this, her fourth edition of this splendid book, are...which is the first Christian Church outside Jerusalem? Who took Christianity to the Isles? Who were the Druids and what did they teach? Who built the roads for the Roman chariots?

In this most important work, she dispells the erroneous belief that Britain was uncivilized compared with Rome and that the Druids were a mischievous sect. The work and teachings of this early British Church (Culdee) for 1100 years is detailed in this remarkable book. Although declared heretical by Rome in A.D. 705, the Culdee Church struggled on as distinct from the Romans until it was eclipsed by the Roman Catholic Church in the 12th century.

Mrs. Elder states what is little known but of the greatest importance...the fact that Christianity, as a Church, was born in England before anywhere else, and that England was a professed Christian country one hundred years before Rome and, in fact, when Rome was still persecuting Christians.

She draws attention to the singular change, without any opposition, from Druidism to Christianity, which was understandable in that fundamentally they had no great difference in belief. An interesting point is also made as to the difference between the British Church and the Church of England.

The rise and establishment of Christianity in Britain has been dealt with by many writers but in these pages new light has been thrown on the origin of the Culdees, with whom rests the introduction and, with their successors, the defense of the Apostolic Christianity brought by those early Christians to Britain shortly after the Ascension of our Lord.

The history of this period is often criticized because it is compounded both of written records and local legends. It depicts their selfless devotion, their achievements, and in some cases their martyrdom for the sake of the Faith of Christ.

Here, in this Faith strengthening book, we find the names of such well known characters from the New Testament as the two Maries, Martha, Lazarus, Zaccheus, and others, who sowed the seeds of the Gospel to the people of Providence, and elsewhere.

Although the title implies the disciples were "lost", they were really only lost to history for a while.

This author did not rely on tradition or fanciful tales. Rather, he researched historical sources for the information; ancient Roman, French, British, and Greek manuscripts. The volume of evidence is amazing and exciting. It confirms that Paul brought Christianity to Rome about A.D. 56, and documents that Joseph of Arimathea carried the word to Great Britain in A.D. 36.

Mr. Jowett also demonstrates that ancient Britain's were not a bunch of freaks and savages, as they have so often been described by the establishment historian. There was a well organized society in the 1st century. In fact, Britain was the only land that Rome could not conquer. Nation after nation fell before Roman armies for hundreds of years, but not the British Isles; not even after Emperor Claudius issued his edict to exterminate all Christians everywhere. The Isles were victorious because of highly trained, well-equipped armies who defended their country in the name of Jesus Christ.

One doesn't have to be British or of British ancestry to develop, as you read, a great sense of sympathy and affection for these early Christians who gave their lives in defense of home, family and church so their descendants would have the freedoms they now enjoy. Drama of the Lost Disciples is an excellent work.

This is a book of biographical sketches of the more famous women of Israel. The author believes the women of the Bible have not received the honor and recognition they deserve and she has attempted, in this historical study, to help the reader of the Bible to realize that the women of both the Old and New Testaments were characters worthy of our highest esteem.

Mrs. Elder portrays her characters with feelings and thoughts much like our own and paints a vivid picture of the manners and customs of those times.

Back in the earliest of biblical times the woman was the equal of man in every respect. She had an independence, in patriarchal times, surpassing even today, and was entrusted with the administration of her husband's property as well as her own.

The women of heathen nations were the first to lose this independence which was retained by the women of Israel until the captivities. With the return of the captives from Babylon to Palestine a marked change is obvious and family life was never the same again. The women of both Houses of Israel had become degraded to the level of the women of their captors, and a woman was viewed by her husband as a mere chattel and his slave.

The author shows how women began to regain their previous status with the appearance of Christ and his positive attitude toward them as he encouraged them to speak by addressing them and conversing with them in public. Although the journey back to the level of equality, formerly enjoyed by those earliest women of the Bible, has been slow and arduous, it has finally ended, today, with her ancient independence restored. Now it is her duty to choose the right path.

In this special work the author reveals little known aspects of these wonderful 'foremothers'...from Sarah to Claudia... and, in so doing, has not only made a significant contribution to our knowledge, but has rejected, by positive statement, the negative criticisms which have unfortunately been so long extant.
